Yesterday I received the model kit in a box. My three year old help to bring the box over the doorstep. He was very eager to help, lets see if it will be help or accidents later on.

And today it was time to open and check what was inside. When opening, it was thrilling to see the content as well as the detail level of parts and documentation. I have read other peoples review about the fantastic fit and finish and I wanted to see by myself.

All items were packed in a secure manner to avoid transport damages and I did not find any scratches or other damages to any of the parts. According to the parts list there should be 139 different items, from which 26 railing stanchions, two propeller kits incl shaft and coupling etc.

The hull consist of four major parts that are to be glued together and when trying them they snap into each other in an reassuring manner. On top of the deck a large superstructure piece that has a tight fit covers the deck opening, meaning water will not likely enter into the model.

Now its time to read the building instructions and plan the build in more detail. However I have already noticed some deviations between original and model. Some major deviations such as the propeller shafts position and inclination, wrong sizing of benches etc,  but more about these issues as the build progress.

Until I receive my own model kit and can start building I felt like giving you a first peek about what has been on my computer screen for the last month.

By Google search I found many nice pictures of the model boat as well as some of the original. The problem when searching internet for pictures or videos of something is that you do not know where to look, so a strict narrow search will not give you any results and a wide search will give you plenty of unwanted links. I have gathered a list of links where I found pictures during my search and many hours of clicking next, next, next…

All pictures below are linked from other websites and provided as is. If you follow the links you will be taken to some nice photo gallerys.

These pictures are from a yacht forum where people who like the full size vessel can search for their yacht. Elburg Yachting was the yachtbroker who sold Jules Verne when the owner wanted a larger vessel.

He wrote the evaluation article which Graupner is linking to from their webshop. Nice summary of differencies between original and model kit.

Up till now the main task has been to gather as much detailed information as possible. In conjunction with this I would like to thank you all for contributing. Without your help it would not be possible to realize a true-to-original model. When I receive the model kit from Graupner and start building, I will propably realize further details to which I will need to ask for supplementary information.
